<image:caption>I was a primary school teacher for 10 years in Queensland and one year in the USA before becoming a parent. It was then that I began tutoring students. Over time, I’ve narrowed my tutoring focus and research to the rewarding work of teaching people to read and spell. I home educate my two children and am registered with the Home Education Unit (HEU) in Queensland. This means I create and write an individualised education program for my children, reporting on their progress yearly. I’ve been doing this since 2013. I didn’t plan on becoming a literacy specialist. When I started tutoring, I specialised in teaching MATHS. I used to think English wasn’t fun because there were too many variables and I couldn’t see the patterns. After being exposed to the Barton Reading and Spelling System and doing further research into structured literacy and the Orton-Gillingham appoach, I became excited when I realised I could see the patterns in English and understand the rules. Like many students of the Barton System, I exclaimed, “Why wasn’t I taught this in school?!” Furthermore, “Why wasn’t I taught to teach like this in my teacher training!?” I love using a multisensory approach to teach reading and spelling. This means that more than one sense is engaged in each learning activity. Body movements, seeing, hearing, touching and speaking are combined to enable new learning to be transferred from short term-memory to long-term memory. I also love incorporating games into my lessons to support and reinforce the students’ new skills. I feel great joy in seeing students achieve their OWN goals with their developing reading and spelling skills, after they have worked so hard during our time together. If you want to help provide the tools your child needs to confidently approach reading or spelling in a new way, schedule an appointment with me today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services & Rate - Welcome to Reading & Spelling Tutoring.</image:title>
<image:caption>When your child has an unexpected reading challenge, more reading practice alone isn’t the solution. Intervention with a Structured Literacy approach that is research and evidence-based is key for a student with dyslexia. I provide one-on-one instruction using a Structured Literacy approach which has been proven by research to be effective with people who have difficulty with reading and spelling. The frequency of instruction is an important factor in how fast a student progresses. My tutoring sessions consist of two, 1-hour sessions per week, with the parent assisting with at least 2 hours of homework throughout the week (e.g. 4 x 30 minutes). In some special circumstances, tutoring sessions consist of one, 1-hour session per week with the parent assisting with at least 3 hours of homework throughout the week. This is the minimum time required to progress and ‘close the gap.’ The pace of instruction is customised to fit each individual. I progress through a scope and sequence of skills, providing extra practice and reinforcement as needed, until each skill is learned to mastery. If your child is moderately to severely dyslexic, please view tutoring as a long-term necessity, rather than a short-term ‘quick fix.’ It generally takes a moderately dyslexic student 2-3 years to make their way through the entire scope and sequence of most Structured Literacy instruction, at the pace of 2 sessions per week. However, your child WILL make progress and close the gap in reading and spelling. Tutoring with the right approach is just part of the solution. While your child is working on the technicalities of reading and spelling, I encourage them to listen to audio books to access the rich vocabulary in age-appropriate literature and the topics they are eager to learn about. My years of experience teaching children have taught me that with appropriate instruction, patience and dedication, dyslexic children can move towards and meet their own goals for becoming capable and successful readers and spellers. Reading & Spelling Tutoring turns the ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Home Educators - Homeschooling Parents,</image:title>
<image:caption>Are you choosing to home educate your child? Does your child need help learning how to read and spell, but you don’t really know where to start? Do you suspect (or know) your child has dyslexia? Do you think that you’d like to do some of the instruction with your child but not all of it? Would you like step-by-step guidance, with a proven program, teaching reading and spelling? If you answered ‘Yes!’ to the questions above, then keep reading to see how I can help. LITERACY: I offer tutoring to children and parents as a team. Parents are encouraged to attend tutoring sessions with their child at least once per week either online or in person. I do all the new teaching and organise the resources. Then I provide the parent with these resources plus games and activities to do with their child throughout the week. These games reinforce the new concepts that were taught in the lesson. I also teach the parents to use multisensory techniques with their child so the new learning ‘sticks.’ I cover the technical aspects of learning to read and spell. This effectively covers half of the English curriculum. What is left, you ask? All the creative parts: listening to audio books, watching movies, plays, drama; creating their own dramatic pieces or stories if they are so inclined. If you want to document this creativity, you can record them, write for them or even use technology that can convert speech to text. I home educate my two children. I’m registered with the Home Education Unit (HEU) in Queensland. This means I create my own, individualised home education program for my children and report yearly to the HEU. I’ve been doing this since 2013. Parents registered with the HEU, whose children work with me, will have support to know what to write in their yearly plan for English. SUMMARY: As a home educator myself, I can offer parents an understanding and appreciation of a home education lifestyle. This can be a relief for parents because sometimes this appreciation is hard to find when seeking professional services. I work with all ages. I welcome children, teenagers, young adults and mature people who are eager to improve their reading and spelling skills. If you would like to talk to me about tutoring, please use my contact form to arrange a chat on the phone. I’d love to help you reach your goals.</image:caption>
